NY Psychotherapist Colette Dowling, LMSW
Colette Dowling, LMSW, has a private practice in Manhattan. Following is how she describes her practice.
"I focus on the treatment of women and believe that I have something unique to offer them. Ever since I began work on The Cinderella Complex: Women’s Hidden Fears of Independence, I've been aware of the conflicts many women have about their autonomy. They fear that if they become too independent they'll end up alone. But on the other hand, if they're overly dependent they'll be swallowed up by the other person. The challenge, then, is how to arrive at healthy and productive balance.
I think women's lives are extremely complicated. We're expected to be parents, and workers, and lovers. Somehow, we're supposed to know how make it all fit together. If we falter for a minute we're vulnerable to being criticized. Inside us there are challenging voices: You're not doing enough with your life. When will you get it together? Why aren’t you satisfied with things the way they are?
I enjoy helping women discover that they can stand behind their intelligence and creativity and still have intimate relationships in which they're loving and vulnerable. I have a lifetime of experience, as well as advanced training in psychotherapy that allows me to help my patients get beneath what they know about themselves to find a deeper truth. Within that truth lies the possibilitiy of becoming stronger, better able to cope with challenges, and better able to express one's innermost desires and talents."
